Spellbinding skylarks

There is something magical about sitting out in the sun on the wooden deck at Mandalay, overlooking the beach at this time of year, as now is the time that the skylark, which nests in the sand dunes, does its magical vertical ascent, singing its heart out as it rises, until it is just a speck in the sky.

There it will flutter for minutes on end, all the while providing that magical song, which always evokes memories of the Vaughan Williams classical piece, The Lark Ascending, until suddenly, for no apparent reason, it will descend like a stone, back to the ground.
